چکیده

Since the development of Optimality Theory (OT; Prince & Smolensky (2004)) and Harmonic Grammar (HG; Legendre et al. (1990)) in the 1990’s, phonological theory has focused on the grammatical constraints that conspire to produce output generalizations. In the 1970s and 1980s, however, the focus was on representations, both above and below the level of the segment. Traditional feature matrices gave way to the autonomous features of Autosegmental Phonology (Leben (1973, 1978, 1980); Goldsmith (1976), McCarthy (1981)). The ability of features to link independently to timing units permitted, among other things, the representation of contour segments:

Autosegmental Aims in Surface Optimizing Phonology

We develop a novel optimization approach to tone. Its grammatical component consists of the similarityand proximity-based correspondence constraint framework of Agreement by Correspondence theory (ABC). Its representational component (Q theory) decomposes segments (Q) into temporally ordered, quantized subsegments (q), which comprise unitary sets of distinctive features, including tone. ABC+Q u...

Re-reading the Narrative in Ibrahim Sultan’s Shahnama Based on Paul Ricoeur`s Philosophical Hermeneutics Theory

A manuscript of Ibrahim Sultan`s Shahnama available at the Bodleian Library of Oxford, representing the full range of visual features of the Shiraz School at the age of Ibrahim Sultan Timuri (817-838 AH) which has the symbolic aspects and semantic trends of painting and the potentiality to be interpreted based on philosophical hermeneutics. It seems that analyzing the visual element and re...

A subsegmental correspondence approach to contour tone (dis)harmony patterns

A long-standing question in phonological theory is whether there are parallels in the behavior and representation of contour tones and contour segments—that is, segments with distinct gestures sequenced in time (e.g., prenasalized consonants, diphthongs; Sagey 1986; et seq.)—and, if they exist, what can be gained from the understanding of these parallels (e.g., Yip 1989). Zhang (2001, 2004), fo...

Title : Mimetic gemination in Japanese : A challenge for Evolutionary Phonology

Blevins’s Evolutionary Phonology attempts to derive most if not all synchronic phonological patterns from diachronic changes: “[R]ecurrent synchronic sound patterns are a direct reflection of their diachronic origins, and, more specifically...regular phonetically based sound change is the common source of recurrent sound patterns. Evolutionary Phonology...investigates this hypothesis and explor...

Phonetics and Phonology in Russian Unstressed Vowel Reduction: A Study in Hyperarticulation

Unstressed vowel reduction figures centrally in recent literature on the phonetics-phonology interface, in part owing to the possibility of a causal relationship between a phonetic process, duration-dependent undershoot, and the phonological neutralizations observed in systems of unstressed vocalism. Of particular interest in this light has been Russian, traditionally described as exhibiting tw...
